Saint Maravillas of Jesus

Maravillas, whose name means "marvelous", was born in Madrid, Spain in the year 1891. She entered Carmel in 1919 and founded 11 Carmelite monasteries faithful to the traditions of St. Teresa of Jesus in both Spain and India before her death in 1974. She is the most recently canonized Carmelite saint (2003). Her feastday is December 11.

Saint Maravillas

This icon comes from the Carmelite Monastery of Nuns in Harissa, Lebanon. It is entitled "Transparency in Transmission". Saint Maravillas is shown holding a medallion of Our Lord Jesus Christ over her heart, revealing her intimate relationship with the Word Incarnate. Her right hand is lifted up as a sign of her intercession for all humanity. The Blessed Virgin and Child appear in the upper right, and the blue circle in the upper left symbolizes the divinity of God hidden in the night of faith.
